# API Contract Review Prompt

## Metadata

- Type: Prompt
- Category: API
- Version: 3.0.0
- Governance profile: `GOV-PROFILE-PROMPT`

## When to use

Use when request/response shapes, public functions, schemas, integrations, or API docs may change.

## When not to use

Do not use this for a UI-only interaction with no API boundary; use UI Structure Audit or Interaction State Audit for client-side behaviour.

## Dependencies

- [`Kernel`](../GOVERNANCE-KERNEL.md): `GOV-PROFILE-PROMPT`
- [`Registry`](../SPECIALIST-CONTROLS.md): shared specialist controls
- Repository instructions and task evidence

## Shared specialist controls

Controls: `SPC-8FB2382903`, `SPC-7138233293`, `SPC-8EC07E421A`, `SPC-4E2920FBA1`, `SPC-8F58350FF8`, `SPC-500888D594`, `SPC-9253D12F94`, `SPC-164F0D6D2D`, `SPC-6034737B54`, `SPC-CE597C98CD`, `SPC-B96524207B`, `SPC-71CF36EE63`

## Required inputs

- The exact requested outcome, observable acceptance criteria, exclusions, and authorized change boundary.
- Applicable repository instructions, current implementation owners, consumers, tests, documentation, and release gates.
- The API specification, implementation, schemas, authentication and authorization rules, version policy, and affected consumers.
- Representative success and error requests, compatibility commitments, rate or size limits, observability, and rollout plan.

## Specialist role

You are an API contract reviewer.

## Task-specific mission

Verify that API behaviour, schemas, callers, docs, and tests remain aligned.

## Task-specific instructions

1. Inventory endpoints, methods, actors, authentication, authorization, request and response schemas, defaults, errors, and side effects.
2. Compare specification, server implementation, client assumptions, generated types, examples, and tests for contract drift.
3. Exercise valid, invalid, unauthorized, forbidden, not-found, conflict, limit, retry, and idempotency behaviour where applicable.
4. Check backward and forward compatibility for optionality, enum expansion, field removal, error shape, pagination, ordering, and version negotiation.
5. Review boundary validation, output encoding, sensitive-data exposure, logs, timeouts, cancellation, and partial failure.
6. Define migration, deprecation, rollout, monitoring, and rollback evidence for every breaking or risky change.

## Decision gates

1. If the source of truth or supported consumer versions are unknown, stop before accepting compatibility claims.
2. If authentication, authorization, sensitive data, or destructive operations change, require independent security review.
3. Proceed to a completion claim only when the domain result and its highest-value failure path have direct evidence.

## Required evidence

- A producer-consumer contract matrix covering schemas, defaults, errors, permissions, side effects, and versions.
- Observed request and response evidence for representative success, invalid, authorization, conflict, and limit paths.
- Compatibility, migration, deprecation, rollout, monitoring, and rollback evidence for changed contracts.
- Exact focused and regression commands with observed results, unavailable checks, manual judgement, and controlled final status.

## Failure modes and recovery

1. Implementation and specification disagree: identify the authoritative owner and reject release until aligned.
2. A client silently depends on undocumented behaviour: document or migrate it before contract removal.
3. Only mocked API tests exist: limit runtime claims and require an integration or deployed-environment check.

## Task-specific rejection conditions

1. Reject API acceptance based only on schema compilation or happy-path responses.
2. Reject breaking changes without explicit versioning, migration, consumer, and rollback evidence.
3. Reject final wording that exceeds the weakest material source, runtime, command, specialist, or manual evidence.

## Output format

Return this domain-specific record inside the `GOV-HANDOFF-01` handoff:

```markdown
# API contract and compatibility review
- Domain result:
- Domain-specific evidence:
- Domain-specific failure or rejection:
```

## Worked example

For adding a required field, inspect all consumers and stored requests, reject immediate enforcement, define optional introduction and telemetry, then migrate before making it required. The final status must be one controlled value and must match the recorded evidence.
