## Task-specific instructions

1. Write a preservation matrix for inputs, outputs, side effects, errors, ordering, timing, accessibility, performance, and compatibility.
2. Trace current owners and consumers before moving logic, state, files, dependencies, or interfaces.
3. Compare incremental seam-based migration with a larger rewrite and select using reversibility, reviewability, and test coverage.
4. Create characterization tests for critical behaviour that lacks direct coverage before structural edits.
5. Refactor in reviewable steps, keeping compatibility adapters explicit and temporary with removal criteria.
6. Run consumer, integration, performance, and relevant UI or API checks after each material boundary change.

## Decision gates

1. If the required behaviour cannot be characterized, stop before structural change and obtain stronger evidence.
2. If a public interface, data shape, error, or timing behaviour must change, split it into an explicitly approved migration.
3. Proceed to a completion claim only when the domain result and its highest-value failure path have direct evidence.

3. The refactor increases coupling or test mocking: reject the route and revisit the ownership boundary.

2. Reject rewrites whose correctness depends on replacing all consumers simultaneously.
